berry, buckwheat and chocolate smoothie bowl

Deliciously thick and chocolaty. This smoothie bowl is absolutely divine and comes with many health benefits.

This recipe was a result of not having frozen bananas in my freezer and I really felt like a thick, chocolaty smoothie bowl for lunch. So, to thicken the smoothie bowl I decided to add a few raw buckwheat groats.... the result was this delicious, thick, chocolaty, berry smoothie bowl.

TO MAKE THIS YOU WILL NEED
  • A banana, fresh or frozen

  • raw buckwheat groats

  • chocolate protein powder

  • cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa powder

  • almond milk or milk of choice

  • frozen blackberries, or berries of your choice

  • and a high-speed blender

Using buckwheat adds a different texture (slightly grainy, almost porridge like) and a subtitle nuttiness to the smoothie, which I absolutely love.

Using frozen banana and frozen berries will also help thicken the smoothie.

If you do prefer a runnier smoothie, simply add more almond milk.

OTHER ADD-IN OPTIONS
  • Replace the frozen banana with frozen cauliflower or frozen mango

  • Other berries that will be great in this recipe are cherries, blueberries, raspberries or strawberries.

  • Add leafy greens such as spinach or kale to boost the nutrient intake

  • If really want to add more sweetness to the smoothie, opt for a refined sugar-free option such as maple syrup or dates.

  • Add flaxseeds or chia seeds

SMOOTHIE BOWL TOPPING IDEAS
  • granola

  • nuts or seeds

  • fresh fruit

  • nut butters or tahini

  • cacao nibs

  • hemp seeds

Homemade smoothie bowls can have many health benefits as they are often nutrient dense and sugar-free. Adding protein powder really amps up the protein intake of your meal.
