Best Vegan Food in Jozi

Updated: Jun 27

South Africa in general unfortunately does not cater much for vegans in Restaurant. It does seem to slowly change, but thankfully in places like Johannesburg it is a lot easier to find good vegan food.

If you do find yourself in Jozi, these are some places I recommend for good vegan food.

(This is the interior from the Morning Glory Café - info below)

Lexis Eatery

Lexis has restaurants at several locations. We have only been to the one in Rosebank, but everything we have tasted on their menu has been amazing.

We have eaten there a few times and every time the food was good.

Their breakfasts are great, especially their tofu scramble bowl.

On Wednesdays they have a special on their burgers (take away). I recommend trying there BBQ Tofu burger!

Their fresh juices and smoothies are amazing - you have to try the pumpkin pie smoothie!

This place is great for breakfasts/ brunches and lunches.

Coalition

This place makes the best pizza in Jozi (in my opinion). They don’t have many vegan options, but some of their pizzas can easily be made vegan, they are very accommodating that way. It is however all about that chewy pizza base and crust! I recommend trying their vegan pizza with pickled beetroot, wild rocket and tahini.

Ba Pita

I could easily eat at this place a few times a week. I highly recommend their Za'atar flatbread (I could eat it all day) with a side of the Muhammara dip and their Falafel Laffa are really good. Do not leave that place without buying a small tub of their homemade vegan chocolate ice creams.

Pauls Homemade Ice cream

Pauls Homemade ice-cream has a few shop locations, with one of them in Rosebank Mall.

The first time I had Pauls Homemade vegan ice-cream was in Umhlanga. During a 5 hour road trip, we added an additional 45 min detour, just to have their vegan chocolate ice cream. It is THAT GOOD!

The ice cream flavours keep changing, but it's worth going back again and again until they have that vegan chocolate ice cream available again.

Little Addis Café

(Ethiopian restaurant)

Situated in 44 Stanley, this place is a little hidden gem. Their full portion vegetarian platter is vegan and is enough for 2 very hungry people. I love everything on that platter, but the injera is the best!

A great lunch spot in the courtyard (sometimes with live music), with a glass of cold white wine.

Be prepare to get those hands dirty! (They eat with their hands, no cutlery!)

Forest gelato

Do not leave 44 Stanley without trying the vegan ice-cream at Forest gelato. Their vegan chocolate ice cream is incredible.

Morning Glory Café

A gorgeous pink café with a good variety of food! They are not a vegan-only café, but they have a variety of vegan options and the place is always buzzing. I had their Rocky Road Granola breakfast bowl, served with berries and a poached pear and to make it vegan they replaced the yoghurt with oat milk. It was delicious!

The portion sizes are generous, so go hungry! A great spot for weekend brunches.

If you do find yourself stuck at home either due to lockdown or to escape the cold, I recommend the following for UBEREATS deliveries:

Let's Veg, Greenside

I recommend trying one of their stir fries, bao buns and mushroom dumplings. Most things on their menu look good, but have only ordered from them once.

There are a lot more restaurants I wanted to visit during my time in Jozi, but unfortunately due to Covid the restaurant visits were cut short.
