chocolate pear chilled oats (vegan)

Updated: Nov 6, 2021

Naturally sweet, oven-roasted pears and a creamy chilled oats, doused in a rich chocolaty sauce.

This might not be a classic combo, but it may just be my newest flavour obsession.

This breakfast is made with:

Oven-roasted pears.

Fresh pears are halved, cored and baked in the oven for about 20min, until soft.

Chilled vanilla oats.

The oats is cooked for 2min in the microwave the night before and chilled overnight in the fridge.

Alternative option: to only make an overnight oats and not cook the oats.

A chocolaty sauce.

This is made with cacao powder, hot water and maple syrup. Although no actual chocolate is used in the sauce, you can melt some in the sauce if you wish.

Lets talk about pears.

I think pears are a bit underrated, don't you think?

A good pear can be one of the sweetest and really versatile fruits.

Roasting them in the oven intensifies the flavour and makes them even sweeter (once they are cooled down they remind me a bit of canned pears). Soft, juicy and sweet.

To roast them you need to cut the half the pears, core the centre and transfer them into a oven proof dish. Add a tiny bit of water and cover the dish with tin foil, before placing the dish in the oven.

Depending on the size, type and softness of the pears, the cooking time might be shorter or take a bit longer.

The goal is to get the pears soft enough to eat with a spoon.

If the pear is not too fresh, I would recommend peeling the pears beforehand as the skin can become a bit tough and chewy.

This oats is

  • chocolaty

  • decadent

  • naturally sweetened

  • refined sugar-free

  • gluten-free

  • vegan

  • easy to make

I have made this twice in two days, I am telling you, you will LOVE IT!

CHOCOLATE PEAR CHILLED OATS

Naturally sweet oven-roasted pears and a creamy chilled oats, doused in a rich chocolaty sauce.

This might not be a classic combo, but it certainly is delicious and indulgent.

Prep time: 5 min, plus overnight

Cooking time: 25min

Serves: 2

INGREDIENTS

FOR THE OATS

  • 100g rolled oats (for gluten-free option use gluten-free oats)

  • 200ml almond milk (or milk of choice)

  • pinch of salt

  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract

  • 1small mashed banana, to sweeten (optional)

FOR THE PEARS

  • 1 ripe pear, halved and cored

FOR THE CHOCOLATE SAUCE

  • 1/3 cup hot water

  • 1 tbsp cacao powder, unsweetened

  • 1 tbsp maple syrup

INSTRUCTIONS

FOR THE OATS

  1. Mix all the ingredients together and microwave for 2 minutes. If you are adding the banana for sweetness, do this after the oats has been microwaved.

  2. Let the oats cool in the fridge overnight.

FOR THE PEARS

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C

  2. In a small oven-proof dish add the pear halves, with the cut-side facing down.

  3. Add 3 - 4 tbsp water to the dish and cover with aluminium foil.

  4. Bake in the oven for 20 - 25min. The cooking time will depend on the freshness and softness of the pear. Test the pear after 20min. The pears should be soft enough to eat with a spoon.

FOR THE CHOCOLATE SAUCE

  1. Mix the ingredients together until smooth.

TO ASSEMBLE

  1. Add half a pear to each bowl/jar and divide the chilled oats between the two bowls. Pour over the warm chocolate sauce and enjoy!
