Dalgona Coffee
Original post 09/07/2020.
A sweet, rich and creamy. A layer of whipped coffee cream sitting on top of hot or iced milk. This is my take on the viral 3 ingredient whipped coffee.
SWEET, BITTER & CREAMY
I am not normally a sweet coffee drinker, but I have to say not only does it look pretty but I can see what the hype is all about. It certainly is an indulgent treat.
WHAT IS A DALGONA COFFEE
A Dalgona coffee or whipped coffee is traditionally made from equal parts instant coffee powder, sugar, and water and is whipped for a few minutes until it becomes fluffy and creamy.
DALGONA?
Dalgona is the name of a spongy South Korean coffee candy, which has a bubbly texture. Visually it has a similar texture of Dalgona coffee foam. I believe this is where it got it's name from.
WHISKING
I use a handheld whisk for this. It does however takes about 4 - 5 minutes to get the desired texture.
You can also use a handheld electric mixer or a milk frother.
LESS SUGAR
Traditionally the recipe is made with 2 tbsp coffee, 2 tbsp sugar and 2 tbsp hot water (serves 2).
I have reduced the sugar to one and a half tablespoon of sugar and it worked just as well.
Instead of white or brown table sugar I used coconut sugar for a caramel-like flavour.
HOT OR COLD
Serve this with hot milk or with cold milk, over ice.
Either option is delicious.
ADDITIONAL OPTIONS
Top with cacao powder, crumbled biscuits, or even a drizzle of honey.
I have read that spices are added to whipped coffees in India. I have not tried it yet, but I can only imagine spices such as chai spices would be delicious.
COFFEE
You will need to use an instant coffee for this. Ground coffee will not work!
Either decaf and caffeinated will fine to use.
SUGAR
Any granular sugar will work. I personally prefer using coconut sugar as it has a caramel flavour.
Different sugars might affect the result of the whipped texture and how long it will stay fluffy before it melts.
WATER
The Dalgona coffee recipe works best with boiled or really hot water. The hot water will help dissolve both the instant coffee and sugar instantly, leading to a frothier and fluffier texture.
SERVE WITH M*LK
I love using almond or oat milk, but you can use any milk of choice.
Why not try it with this homemade cashew milk.
