Lost in the Namibian Desert

Updated: Apr 18

Last night sitting at our kitchen table, sipping on an Old Fashioned, we talked about the trips we want to take once this whole situation is over. The list is getting longer and it got us talking about past trips and favourite moments we had since we have met.

If I had to decide on a few favourite travel moments I would say Namibia is on top of the list....

  • Climbing the giant orange sand dunes in Sossusvlei

  • Viewing the wildlife in its distinctive landscape in the Etosha National Park.

  • Enjoying an ice-cold beer in the pool in 40 + degrees, with a view of the desert.

  • Driving the desolated roads with barely any wildlife or humans in sight.

  • Sunsets – unlike any other place.

  • Enjoying prosecco under the stars on New Year’s Eve with wonderful friends.

Thankfully with the title lost in the Namibian desert I don't mean it literally. Or at least not this time.

Yes, we often get lost when driving somewhere but that is because I am REALLY bad with directions and reading maps, but thankfully on this trip we managed to stay on track the whole trip.... Ok, so maybe I gave wrong directions once, but luckily we realised it a few minutes later.

This was the view from our accommodation at the Dolomite camp in the Etosha.

I mean, isn't this just BEAUTIFUL ? That view..... it is so surreal and so dreamy how can one not get lost in this scenery.

There were a lot of moments where it felt like I was in a dream or on a movie set.

And thank goodness for the pool!

Flowing lines of the sand dunes as far as the eye can see.

The ever change landscapes are just unreal.

And of course always with the big hat and SPF 40+ sunblock at hand.

Climbing the giant orange sand dunes in Sossusvlei was one of my favourite moments. The views from up there were spectacular, but I enjoyed running down the sand dunes just as much. I felt like a little kid again, just letting go. If you fall, at least you land on soft sand.

I RECOMMEND THE FOLLOWING FOR YOUR NAMIBIA TRIP

  • Take a lot of drinking water and fresh fresh fruit and snacks as shops are few and far.

  • Fresh produce - take as much as you can as the produce there is limited and not always the best.

  • Sun protection - Sunblock and/or a hat. I always take a light coloured, lightweight long sleeve shirt as I am prone to sunburn.

  • Camera - to capture the surreal scenery.

  • Binoculars

  • A map!

  • Definitely rent/use a 4x4 vehicle. Almost all the roads are dirt roads, and can be very sandy and bumpy. Expect your car to be very dusty inside after hours of driving in the dust.

  • We rented a car fridge/ freezer which was the best decision. We brought a lot of fresh produce and homemade pre-made meals (e.g. lasagne or Melanzane Parmigiana) which simply needed to reheated and served with a salad.

  • Take extra fuel, as gas stations are few and far.

  • Take a break from social media and take moments to think where you actually are.

Minus the shrubs and the hot air balloons we could be on the movie set of the Martian. I can totally see Matt Damian driving past in his mars rover any minute now....

I was privilege doing this trip with 3 very special people and it will always be one of my favourite memories.

If there is ever a place to add to your bucket list, this should be one of them.
