Oven-baked pears
Updated: Jul 1
Sweet, juicy and soft oven-baked pears. Only 5 ingredients and minimum effort. This makes a wonderfully delicious dessert or an indulgent breakfast. This is one of my favourite ways to eat pears.
PEARS
I find pears are definitely an underrated fruit. They have such a delicate, sweet flavour and are great to use in so many different dishes, both sweet and savoury, so I am not sure why they don't get more recognition.
As they are packed with fiber, vitamins, beneficial nutrients and promote gut and heart health, I think they should definitely not be overlooked.
DESSERT OR BREAKFAST
This is so easy to make and can be enjoyed as a healthier dessert or an indulgent breakfast.
It's as simple as slicing the pears in half, removing the core, drizzling them with maple syrup or honey and baking the in the oven until soft and juicy.
Drizzling them with maple syrup or honey is completely optional, but it does make them even more indulging as the syrup caramelises the edges of the pears.
If you want to keep this as low sugar as possible, simply omit.
HOW TO SERVE
Once the pears are soft and juicy, simply serve them with a generous dusting of cinnamon, a few spoonsful non-dairy yoghurt and a bit of homemade granola or toasted nuts for crunch.
The combination of the warm, juicy pears with the creamy, cool yoghurt and the crunch from the granola is just perfect.
TIPS!
Bake the pears until they are really soft and juicy. You want to be able to eat them easily with a spoon - the spoon should just glide right through.
The maple syrup or honey is completely optional. I often make them without and they tastes just as good. Using the syrup does obviously make the dish sweeter and it also helps with the caramelisation.
It all depends on the sweetness and firmness of the pears when making these. Just follow your instinct. Really, you can't go wrong with this recipe.

OVEN-BAKED PEARS
Sweet, juicy and soft oven-baked pears. A wonderfully delicious dessert or breakfast.
Serves: 2
Time: 25 minutes
INGREDIENTS
2 pears
2 tbsp maple syrup or honey (if using)
dusting of ground cinnamon
TO SERVE
4 tbsp non-dairy yoghurt
homemade granola or toasted nuts
INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 200C
Cut the pears in half, lengthwise. Scoop the centre core out in each half, using a teaspoon.
Transfer the pears to a roasting dish and drizzle with maple syrup (optional)
Flip the pears over so that they are now cut side down, before covering the dish tightly with foil.
Place in the preheated oven and bake for 20 - 25 minutes or until the pears are soft and juicy to your liking. Depending on the firmness of the pears you might have to adjust the baking time.
If you wish, you could remove the foil the last few minutes of baking and flip the pears facing up. Switch the oven to grill for a few minutes to caramelise the pears a bit more. Keep an eye on them.
Carefully lift and transfer the pear halves to plates, dust with ground cinnamon and serve warm or cold with the yoghurt and granola.
