Positano to Furore, Italy
Updated: Jun 27
With the current travel lockdown rules still in place it is hard to remember what it feels like to travel and explore a new place. Places where one can hardly speak the language, but by the end of that trip you know how to ask for Wi-Fi and order a coffee or a glass of red.
It has been nearly 7 years since our last trip to Italy and I can honestly say it is still one of my favourite places which I would love to visit over and over again.
The architecture, the landscapes, their blue water coasts and of course the FOOD! The pastas, risottos, pizzas, the limoncellos,.... hmmm. And for all my non-vegan friends the seafood.
One of my favourite memories includes me and my husband hiring a motor boat and taking it along the coastline from Praiano to Positano for lunch and back.
The views from the boat were simply surreal. I mean, just look at this - the colourful buildings looking like a little playset against a dramatic mountainous backdrop.
Our journey to the Amalfi coast started in Naples (eating a lot of pizza!) and made our way to the beautiful island of Capri where we spent a few wonderful days in Ana Capri (I will write about that in another post). From there we made our way to the Amalfi Coast via Sorento. Taking a bus from Sorento to Furore was one of the most terrifying, yet utterly impressive experiences. Honestly, I think if you learn to drive on the narrow, winding roads at the Amalfi Coast I am a pretty sure no other road will ever scare you.
A few helpful tips!
Book your trip for outside the busy tourist times.
We went in May and the weather was great. Mornings were fresh, but during the day it was perfectly warm. Best of all, no place was too busy with tourists.
When booking accommodation, be aware that this area is extremely mountainous with steep cliffs. We booked accommodation which on a map showed close to the coast line and looked walking distance from the bus stop to the accommodation. WRONG! Our accommodation was so high up on a mountain, we had to take a cab which took another 20 min.
On arrival at our accommodation we were greeted by our hosts with a refreshing Aperol Spritz which we enjoyed with an incredible view from our balcony. Every bit of effort was totally worth it.
Things I would recommend:
Have limoncello. No other Limoncello tastes like the ones from the Amalfi area.
Try a fresh Amalfi lemon. They are sweet and delicious. Squeeze them over a Caprese salad!
Walking one of the many hiking trails in the Furore area. Sentiero dell' Agavi in Fiore and Sentiero degli Dei are very beautiful hikes.
Hiring a boat at the Marina di Praiano and taking a boat ride to Positano and/or Amalfi. The views are spectacular!!
Visit the Praiano beach! The views are incredible and the sunsets breathtaking. Its worth all those steps.
Having dinner at A'Paranza in Atrani (for all my non-vegan friends the seafood there is as fresh as can be). It is on the expensive side, but I had the best ever risotto there.
Eat a lot of gelato! When in Rome (or rather Amalfi), hey? My favourites are pistachio or chocolate.
Visit and explore Positano
Have a long lunch at one of the many little fishing towns, overlooking the blue water.
Visit one of the many shops that custom makes sandals. I bought a pair seven years ago. They still look like new and are still my favourite sandals.
Take a bus ride along the coast line. It is a scary, but hugely impressive.
Renting a scooter is a great way to get around.
Most beaches here are pebble beaches, but nevertheless still amazing for sunbathing.
Definitely grab a gelato and enjoy it watching the ocean.
Oh and wear comfortable shoes - You will be walking many, many stairs.
A bottle of water is also a good thing to carry with you.
This was the view from our balcony at the accommodation in Furore. How beautiful is this place?!
I highly recommend adding the Amalfi coast to your bucket list. You will not regret it.
I can't wait to go back again! There are still many hidden gems to explore, which we can hopefully do sometime soon!
